Can anyone tell me if there is a significant difference between buying an engine from a salvage yard versus buying one from a company that refurbishes them professionally? The reason I ask is that I need one for my 1998 series 1 and my mechanic is telling me there may not be that much of a difference. The price difference I'm getting from him is $900 for salvage garage vs $2800 from refurbish company including shipping.

Salvage yard engine would be out of a wrecked or junked rover. Refurbished should be basically rebuilt, or at least cleaned and tested.

I agree...unless you're doing the swap yourself, I'd go with the rebuild/remanufactured. They usually come with some sort of guarantee and you're looking at basically a new engine with reconditioned parts, smooth bore, new rings etc.

Go with a salvaged motor and who knows how long that thing will last, whether it leaks oil or whatever.
